(KNSI) – Tax filing season begins January 26th with several new provisions that could benefit millions of Americans, according to the Internal Revenue Service.
Public Affairs Specialist Louise Chen told KNSI News, “There are quite a few changes according to the One Big Beautiful Bill,” referring to the tax legislation passed in July. Among the changes are deductions for seniors, elimination of taxes on tips and overtime pay, exemptions for car loan interest, and expanded health savings accounts. The new rules also include tax-advantaged investment accounts for working families and enhanced adoption credits.
Some households can file their taxes for free through the IRS website. Chen explained, “It’s easy to go through. People with adjusted gross income under $89,000 per year are eligible. They can use this free software to file their taxes.”
With so many changes, Chen recommends taxpayers seek professional help. “My advice is you should go find a tax preparer and/or go on to IRS.gov to file online by using Free File.” The program offers guided software or fillable forms that taxpayers can complete themselves with step-by-step instructions. Interactive tools and information are also available on the IRS website to answer common questions.
Despite recent staffing reductions at the agency, Chen assured taxpayers that help remains available. “We are always here to help. Our tax preparers will do our best.”
The IRS recommends taxpayers gather their W-2 forms and other tax documents early, file electronically, choose direct deposit for refunds, and remain vigilant against tax scams when selecting preparers. The agency is also phasing out check refunds in favor of direct deposit to bank accounts.
For those who can’t meet the April 15 deadline, free extensions are available through IRS Free File. However, Chen emphasized that extensions only apply to filing the return, not paying taxes owed.
