(KNSI) — The winning word at Monday’s Sauk Rapids-Rice School District spelling bee was a perfect testament to the breadth of knowledge on display by the students.
Eighth grader Harrison Nguyen was the last man standing among 19 participants. The contest went 13 rounds with heptathlon the deciding term. The heptathlon is a series of seven track-and-field events that are combined into a single competition.
Finishing in second place was 5th-grader Nova Rushmeyer, a name to watch in future years. Third went to 6th-grader Titus Seline, and 8th-grader Gabriel Anderson was the final winner.
District 742 also held its spelling bee on Monday, with six winners announced. Amir Omar from North Junior High was crowned champion. South’s Thisbe Truax was runner-up, and Kennedy’s Olivia Gould took third. The district gets six representatives to advance. Those slots were earned by Mahbub Omar, Madalyn Steil, and Jack Houston.
The Sartell-St. Stephen School District says 14 students squared off for its bee. The winner was Uriah LaPorta, a 7th grader. Maien Asia took second, and Ingrid Johnson ranked third.
The winners from each district move on to the Regional Spelling Bee on Thursday, February 12th, at the Ritsche Auditorium on the campus of St. Cloud State University.
