(KNSI) — The City of St. Cloud has put out an official statement suggesting that at least some of the social media content alleging immigration arrests locally is inaccurate.

A letter from the Mayor’s Office maintains that the city has not received any formal notifications or coordination requests for raids in St. Cloud from U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement. The letter adds that St. Cloud is barred by the Community Policing Agreement it operates under from carrying out enforcement actions in regards to immigration.

Local police are tasked with prioritizing public safety without sacrificing constitutional protections. The letter notes that this applies to all community members. Protests are acceptable, as are counter-protests, but they must be cleared with the city to ensure measures are in place to prevent them from escalating into violence and to avoid interfering with public safety operations or the rights of others.

The letter ends by reiterating St. Cloud’s commitment to public safety for everyone.
