(KNSI) — The United States Department of Homeland Security has announced the crackdown on illegal immigration is expanding to include potential background check fraud.

Along with Immigration and Customs Enforcement, DHS is launching Operation PARRIS in Minnesota. Analysts will be poring through the applications of 5,600 refugees in the state who have not yet been granted permanent resident status, casually referred to as a green card.

An agency spokesperson says PARRIS is less than a month old, but already resulting in criminal referrals. They explain why the program was launched here. “Minnesota is ground zero for the war on fraud…This operation in Minnesota demonstrates that the Trump administration will not stand idly by as the U.S. immigration system is weaponized by those seeking to defraud the American people. American citizens and the rule of law come first, always.”

A previous effort based only in the Twin Cities was named Operation Twin Shield. Officials say it uncovered widespread immigration fraud.
