(KNSI) – The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources is searching for those with a passion for the outdoors who want a hands-on education and cash a check while doing it.

The DNR is looking for dedicated young adults interested in learning more about natural resource-related careers through paid summer internships. All applicants must be a student and either receive academic credit or be fulfilling an academic requirement as part of their studies.

Minnesota DNR Human Services Director Jordan Krueger told KNSI News they’re looking to fill at least 175 positions. “The really cool thing, is that we have a lot of different opportunities for students studying in the field of natural resources, and we have opportunities for people in other degrees.”

Krueger went on, “We have some positions within fisheries, forestry, ecological monitoring, aquatic invasive species, watercraft inspectors. So you’ve probably actually seen some of these interns out and about without even knowing they’re around.”

She said a few months of service with the department can pave a path for a career in conservation. “We have plenty of interns who have now found permanent positions within the DNR. We love to see that growth happen, and that is really how we want to support these students and why we want to have the internships in the first place.”

The DNR is accepting applications through February 2nd. Positions will start in May and June. Interns work 20 to 40 hours per week and are paid $19 per hour.
