(KNSI) — The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension says it has been iced out of an investigation into the shooting involving a federal immigration officer that occurred Wednesday in Minneapolis.
State officials say the Federal Bureau of Investigation had initially agreed to jointly look into the incident with the BCA Force Investigations Unit, but then changed course. Without access to case materials, evidence, or having the power to interview witnesses, the BCA says it cannot conduct an investigation that meets legal standards.
The Force Investigations Unit was started in 2020 following the death of George Floyd. It was created by an act of the Minnesota legislature to serve as an independent, consistent analyst of officer-involved shootings, providing recommendations to local prosecutors on whether charges are justified.
The BCA says if the feds change their mind, the Force Investigations Unit would be happy to hop back on the case.
