(KNSI) – St. Cloud State University’s nursing program has acquired a state-of-the-art birthing simulator that will allow students to train for life-threatening complications like never before.
The $90,000 manikin, dubbed MamaAnne, can simulate everything from routine deliveries to critical emergencies like postpartum hemorrhage and shoulder dystocia. Unlike the program’s decades-old simulator, which could no longer function properly, MamaAnne can scream during contractions and provide realistic fetal heart monitoring.
The advanced simulator will be used starting this spring.
Melissa Hanzsek-Brill, interim dean of the College of Health and Wellness Professions, called the acquisition “a game-changer in the type of educational experiences that our nursing students will receive.”
The university purchased MamaAnne using Leveraged Equipment Funds, part of a $7.2 million allocation from the Minnesota Legislature to support equipment purchases for education in high-demand fields at the Minnesota State system’s 33 colleges and universities.
