(KNSI) – St. Cloud is reminding property owners they are responsible for clearing public sidewalks of snow and ice following a big storm.

There is no penalty if the concrete is scraped within 24 hours of when the flakes finish flying. Sidewalks on all sides of a property need to be cleared to their full width, and ice has to be removed to the bare pavement. Salt or sand can be used, if needed.

For those with corner lots, the cuts in the curb allowing handicap accessibility also need to be shoveled out. Crosswalks should be cleared to the street gutter.

Snow can be piled in the yard or the boulevard, the grass between the sidewalk and the street. It is illegal to push it out into the street or into a nearby alley.

For snowbirds or those planning a vacation, arrangements need to be made to have someone else clear sidewalks in the case of a storm.

City staff will step in for those who don’t comply. A bill is then automatically sent to the owners, and if unpaid, will get tacked on to property taxes.
