(KNSI) – Winter has settled in early across central Minnesota, a stark contrast to recent years, and that has people chomping at the bit to get out on the ice.
The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources is still urging caution, no matter how far the mercury dips on the thermometer. Recreation Safety Outreach Coordinator Lisa Dugan tells KNSI Radio the recent snows are actually a hindrance to good ice. “The snow will create kind of a blanket and insulating effect on the current ice that we do have, so it might slow down the ice making a little bit.”
There are plenty of variables underneath the ice that are hard to detect unless one has a lot of experience with the lake they’re looking to drop a line in. Dugan recommends seeking out local experts before walking out past shore.
She also reminds people that it never hurts to be cautious in terms of gear. “If you’re going to be fishing, you already have equipment that you’re bringing out. Make sure you’re adding safety equipment with it as well. The most important pieces are going to be the ice picks and some sort of either float coat, life jacket, something that will keep you buoyant should you fall in.”
Another tip is for a person to tell others where they are going and their expected return time, so friends or family can contact public safety officials if they’re late getting back.
