(KNSI) – The Granite City Lumberjacks will host Hockey for a Cause on Friday, December 19th, to raise funds for the nonprofit Smiles for Jake‘s suicide prevention efforts.
The evening will feature multiple fundraising opportunities, including a special Smiles for Jake jersey auction, a silent auction, a chuck-a-puck competition, and raffles throughout the night. All proceeds will benefit the nonprofit organization and the movement it has launched.
The game will be at Sports Arena East in Sauk Rapids, with puck drop at 7:30 p.m. Admission is $10.00 for adults, $7.00 for seniors and students, with free entry for active military and youth under six.
Smiles for Jake was founded in memory of Jake Haapajoki, who died by suicide on February 21st, 2018, at the age of 16. The nonprofit’s mission is to spread positivity through life-affirming actions, listening ears, and the message that everyone should have hope.
According to the organization’s website, Jake was known for his infectious smile that could light up a room, his distinctive wild hair, his love for shoes, and his fondness for candy. He was an athlete, active in his church, and surrounded by family and friends who loved him. Despite his outward happiness in social settings, Jake struggled with inner pain that he couldn’t see past.
In response to their loss, Jake’s family and friends started the Smiles for Jake Movement to provide a light for those suffering from darkness and despair.
