(KNSI) — The National Weather Service has issued a winter storm watch for counties along and north of Interstate 94, starting at 3:00 p.m. Tuesday.

Forecasters say on Tuesday, rain will change to snow from west to east as temperatures drop, eventually becoming all snow by Tuesday night. Snowfall rates could exceed half an inch an hour at times, leading to quick accumulations across central Minnesota. Total accumulations are expected to be between two and four inches. Blustery northwest winds will pick up as the system moves through, with gusts of 35 to 40 miles an hour late Tuesday into early Wednesday, leading to reduced visibility and blowing snow.

The watch expires at noon on Wednesday, but forecasters could upgrade it to a warning as the system approaches.
