(KNSI) — The Ramsey County Medical Examiner’s Office has identified the man who died during a November 16th use-of-force incident in Turtle Lake Township as 37-year-old James Weyaus of Onigum.
The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension says deputies were called just after 4:30 p.m. on November 16th to a house in rural Walker on a report of shots fired. Two Cass County deputies saw a man walking alone on County Road 13, who was later identified as Weyaus. A deputy attempted to talk to him, but he ran, so the deputy followed. During the chase, the deputy and Weyaus exchanged gunfire.
The deputy was hit in the upper right leg. The other deputy saw Weyaus and fired. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
The deputy who was shot was airlifted to a hospital in Fargo, where he was treated and released.
Body worn cameras were in use, and investigators recovered a 9mm handgun, a holster and multiple shell casings from the scene.
The Cass County Sheriff’s Office requested the BCA investigate the use of force. Once the investigation is complete, the BCA will present its findings without recommendation on charges to the Cass County Attorney’s Office for review.
