(KNSI) – Authorities have identified the man who died on Monday night after fleeing from a traffic stop near St. Cloud State University and crashing.
The Minnesota State Patrol identified 41-year-old Mohamud Mahamad Yusuf of St. Cloud as the driver.
According to the St. Cloud Police Department, around 10:45 p.m., an officer spotted a vehicle traveling at 62 mph in a 30-mph zone on University Drive near Killian Boulevard. When the officer attempted to pull the car over, Yusuf fled, prompting a pursuit. He continued westbound across the University Bridge and entered the eastbound lanes as he reached the west end. At that point, the officer immediately attempted to terminate the pursuit.
Yusuf continued driving at high speed through the roundabout at 5th Avenue South and University Drive South, where his 2012 Ford Focus struck a parked 2005 Chevrolet Silverado and a light pole in an apartment building parking lot at the southwest corner of the intersection. The vehicle then rolled over.
Despite life-saving measures at the scene, Yusuf was pronounced dead. He was wearing a seatbelt, and his airbag deployed.
The driver of the parked pickup truck, 53-year-old Mark Keith Weber of St. Cloud, suffered non-life-threatening injuries and was taken to the hospital.
According to police, Yusuf was driving with a canceled license and was considered a threat to public safety due to past driving conduct. The pursuit was captured on the officer’s dash camera and body camera.
The intersection was temporarily closed while Xcel Energy repaired damage to the light pole and power lines.
The crash remains under investigation by the police and the state patrol.
