(KNSI) – The City of St. Cloud is asking residents to grab their shovels at the first sign of snow rather than salt.
The Public Works Department says it only takes one teaspoon of salt to pollute five gallons of water. What starts on a driveway will eventually make its way to local rivers and lakes through the stormwater drain.
They also note that shoveling, when done properly, will nearly eliminate any formation of dangerous ice on the driveway. However, there are times when some salt is needed even after other measures are taken. Public works shares how to do it in the most economic and environmentally friendly way possible.
The department states a coffee mug’s worth of salt is able to treat a 20-foot-long driveway. Each salt granule should be spaced roughly two to three inches apart. It also asks people to store salt in a secure container that won’t spill if it tips over.
