(KNSI) – Drivers who hop back and forth between St. Cloud and the Twin Cities are breathing a sigh of relief.

The Minnesota Department of Transportation announced earlier this week that crews have wrapped up work on the Interstate 94 Gap Project for the winter. When the job is done, the road will be three lanes in both directions from Wright County Road 37 in Albertville to Highway 25 in Monticello. In the meantime, it has been a source of slowdowns for commuters.

In 2025, crews were able to widen and reconstruct the westbound lanes in the work zone, while also replacing underground drainage and putting a new bridge in over County Road 19, along with the installation of some of the noise walls that buffer the roar from highway traffic and the widening of a bridge in Monticello over County Road 75.

Even with the extra lane heading west, drivers can’t take advantage yet. MnDOT has returned the road to its pre-construction configuration, meaning two lanes in each direction along the stretch until spring. It also means a return to 70 mile per hour speed limits.

Next year, traffic will be shifted onto the new westbound lanes so the east lanes can be expanded.
