(KNSI) – Paid Family Medical Leave is on the agenda for Wednesday’s Cold Spring City Council meeting, with costs likely coming in under expectations.

Administrator Kris Dockendorf tells council that they have received a bid through Arch Insurance of 81 cents per $100 of payroll. That’s almost 10% below what the state is willing to provide coverage for (88 cents). PFML is first in line to cover short-term disability claims, which means that policy will fall from $1,042 per month per full-time employee for Cold Spring to $368, a savings of $674.

In many cases, the savings from the change in short-term disability cost completely negates the new PFML policy price if it is split evenly between cities and their employees. The new law requires employers to be on the hook for at least half. Dockendorf says many cities are willing to pick up a majority of the tab as a result. Traditional health and dental insurance has 85% covered by the city.

There will also be a public hearing where HMA and Wold Architects and Donlar Construction unveil the schematic design for the city hall/police department remodeling. The renderings were shown to the construction committee a week ago and Donlar is still working to develop a budget estimate that incorporates the most recent changes.

The meeting is scheduled for 5:00 p.m.
