(KNSI) – Time is running out for property owners in Stearns County who have bought or moved into a new home in 2025 to file paperwork declaring it as homesteaded.
The classification will affect the amount of taxes that a property owner will pay in 2026 and may also affect the owner’s eligibility for a property tax refund. People have until December 31st to file.
Once a homestead is granted, annual applications are not necessary unless they are requested by the county assessor. Law requires people to file within 30 days of the change in status due to a sale, move, or any other reason that would no longer qualify the property for the homestead classification.
