(KNSI) – It should come as no surprise that the state that created Give to the Max Day ranks among the nation’s most generous.

The personal-finance company WalletHub has named Minnesota the fourth most charitable state in the country. The Land of 10,000 Lakes earned particularly high marks for volunteering, ranking third in volunteer rate and fourth in the percentage of the population donating their time. The state also placed 11th for volunteers per capita.

Minnesota also performed well in financial giving, ranking 15th in charities per capita and 16th in the percentage of residents who donate money. The state came in 22nd for the percentage of people who collect and distribute food to those in need.

That generous spirit led Minnesotans to create Give to the Max Day 16 years ago. The annual event encourages people to donate to nonprofit organizations and schools across the state. A dedicated website helps donors find groups in their region that align with their values. This year’s Give to the Max Day falls on November 20th.

Nationally, Wyoming topped WalletHub’s charitable rankings, followed by Utah and Maryland. The least charitable states were New Mexico, Nevada, and Mississippi.

The fourth-place finish was actually a slip for the state. In 2023 and 2024, Minnesota ranked third in charitable giving.
