(KNSI) — The St. Cloud Area School Board wants more time before picking a name for its new multipurpose indoor sports facility.
It will be built on the Apollo High School campus and used for soccer, softball, lacrosse, and practices for baseball, football, and golf. It will also house batting cages and golf simulators.
A committee presented three names: Apex Athletics Complex, Apex 742 Athletic Training Facility, and ACT Athletic Center.
After more than 40 minutes of discussion on the three names, the board decided to adopt a name of their own and settled on either the Apex Athletics Center or the Apex 742 Athletics Center.
The name Apex was universally liked because it reflects the building’s height and the goal of reaching the peak of athletic training and achievement. Administrators also feel it could be nicknamed the “X” now that the Xcel Energy Center has been renamed.
The term Athletics was chosen because it represents the activities taking place inside the building, and Center was chosen over Complex because the district wanted to focus on one building rather than a name they felt could be confused with the entire campus.
Some wanted the district’s state-designated number in the title to honor the taxpayers who approved and will be paying for its construction.
The hang-up was over what a logo would look like and whether St. Cloud Area Schools should be incorporated into it. In the end, administrators suggested that staff come up with some logos to match each name, and then the board can pick one.
The motion was tabled for now, and a name will be decided at the next meeting in December.
