(KNSI) – A space heater is being blamed for causing a fire at a home in western Stearns County on Wednesday night.
Stearns County Sheriff’s deputies arrived at the house in New Munich just before midnight to find the 35-year-old homeowner on his porch trying to put out the blaze with a garden hose. A press release says he had it mostly contained, but heavy smoke had permeated the rest of the house. The New Munich Fire Department was able to take over and eliminate the threat.
The man told deputies earlier in the night he was using a space heater and it was blowing on clothes from across the room, which started a small fire. The man believed he had put out that fire and moved the basket to the porch, where it rekindled. Everyone who lives at the home went to bed and the man woke up as smoke billowed into his bedroom. A 34-year-old woman and three children were all able to evacuate the house without any injuries.
