(KNSI) – Saturday marks National Prescription Drug Take Back Day, and a number of local agencies will host collection points for people to drop off unwanted, unneeded or expired medications in a safe way.
The Drug Enforcement Administration partners with 4,000 law enforcement agencies across the country to collect tablets, capsules, patches, and other solid forms of prescription drugs before they fall into the wrong hands or get used and make someone sick. Since it started in 2010, Take Back Day has removed 19.8 million pounds of medication from circulation.
There are more than 500 disposal locations in Minnesota. Locally, those include the Albany Police Department, Annandale Police Department, Avon Fire Department, Sartell Police Department, Sauk Rapids Police Department, St. Cloud VA Medical Center, Stearns County Sheriff’s Office, Waite Park Police Department, St. Cloud State University, Costco, CVS and Walgreens stores.
Beyond the one-day event, the Sauk Rapids Police Department has installed two donated drop boxes at the Government Center. One is for medications and one for needles, often called sharps.
Collection on the 25th runs from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.
