(KNSI) – Wright County will receive $867,500 from the state to transform a former government center site in downtown Buffalo into a mixed-use development featuring housing, commercial space and a public marina.

The Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development announced the grant Tuesday as part of nearly $2.3 million awarded to five redevelopment and demolition projects statewide.

The 6.8-acre site, which previously housed a gas station, courthouse and jail, will undergo asbestos abatement and demolition before being redeveloped into 16 single-family patio homes and two market-rate apartment buildings totaling 201 units. The project also includes 18,000 square feet of commercial space.

Wright County officials estimate the redevelopment will create 52 jobs, increase the local tax base by $861,000 and leverage $53.5 million in private investment. The county will provide matching funds.

The funding comes from DEED’s Redevelopment Grant Program, which helps communities cover the costs of redeveloping blighted industrial, residential or commercial sites.
