(KNSI) – A St. Cloud man will serve up to 10 years in prison in California for the shooting death of a U.S. Navy sailor in San Diego.

The incident occurred in August 2024 after repeated altercations between two groups of people, first inside a nightclub and then on the sidewalks outside after staff had kicked them out. Ta’Kari Terell Benness fled back to St. Cloud on a Greyhound bus after the incident and was eventually arrested by the police department last October. He was then extradited to California to face trial.

Benness pleaded guilty to killing 18-year-old Albert Soto of New York City and was sentenced to a decade in jail. He’ll likely be eligible for parole after serving 85% of the term.

At the sentencing hearing, Benness apologized for shooting Soto.
