(KNSI) — The only American who chose to remain in Rwanda throughout the 1994 genocide is coming to St. Cloud State University.

SCSU’s Center for Holocaust and Genocide Education is bringing Carl Wilkens to the Cascade Room at the Atwood Memorial Center to talk about what he witnessed and experienced, later documented in his book, “I’m Not Leaving.”

The talk is October 22nd and begins at 5:00 p.m. It is free and open to the public.

For roughly 100 days, members of the Tutsi ethnic group and two others were killed by Hutu militias. It was a period marked by extreme violence rooted in longstanding tensions that were worsened by the Rwandan Civil War.
