(KNSI) – Drought has finally snuck back into central Minnesota after a warm, dry start to fall.
The U.S. Drought Monitor says all of Benton County, over 97% of Sherburne County, and about 18% of Stearns County are abnormally dry in its latest report released on Thursday. Moderate drought stretches across the Iron Range, beginning in Becker County and arcing through the headwaters region to Carlton and Pine Counties.
Readings are taken Tuesday mornings before 8:00 a.m. Since then, central Minnesota has been in the grips of a wet weather system with on-again-off-again showers dominating for nearly 48 hours. That won’t be counted until next week.
Fall drought doesn’t have a large effect on agriculture as crops have already ripened. It can be hard on lawns, though, as it stresses them out before they go dormant for the winter. It often means they take longer to come back in the spring.
