(KNSI) — MEA break is known as one of the busiest travel weekends of the year at the Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport for families who want to head out to a warm weather destination before the holidays and cold weather sets in. Families who want to stick closer to home can also find plenty to do, according to the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources.
The DNR has its Fall Color Finder Map, which is regularly updated to see where the brilliant yellows, blazing oranges, and fiery reds can be found. Even if leaves have fallen in some parts of the state, the DNR says a hike can also be a fun way to get some exercise. Another way is with a scenic drive. Find some good places to visit here.
Parks and recreation areas have opportunities to get some learning in while kids are out on break. Many places offer free Junior Ranger booklets for exploring and discovering plants and animals. They can be found at ranger stations during open hours. Activities inside can be completed to earn points for a Junior Ranger patch.
The I Can! series offered by the DNR helps people who are new to outdoor recreation learn skills and gain confidence to participate in outdoor activities. An I Can Backpack! program is offered at Afton State Park on October 18th and 19th. The program is best for kids ages ten and up. The cost is $105 per reservation, which covers meals and backpacking equipment for two people and a one-day state park vehicle permit. Learn more or register here.
Whether people prefer long treks on challenging forest trails or short, easy jaunts down accessible paved trails, state lands offer a trail for everyone. There are trails at state parks, state forests, and 1,500-plus miles of state trails open to everyone. Some Scientific and Natural Areas also have hiking opportunities, although they don’t all have maintained trails. Find the DNR’s hiking webpage here.
