(KNSI) – Xcel Energy is reminding customers about the state’s Cold Weather Rule.

In Minnesota, renters and homeowners are protected from having service shut off between October 1st and April 30th if the loss of service would turn the heat off. That isn’t an excuse for refusing to pay bills, though. Xcel recommends that any consumer at risk of falling behind contact the utility immediately to set up a payment plan.

Randy Cantu, senior director, Contact Center Operations, says, “We offer a variety of assistance options, including self-service channels, and encourage customers to reach out-whether online or by phone-to make payment arrangements if they’re having difficulty keeping up.”

Households classified as low-income are allowed to make plans that stay under 10% of total income. Learn more about the Cold Weather Rule here.
