(KNSI) – A 23-year-old Minnesota man has pleaded guilty to assisting the terror group ISIS and trying to establish an Islamic Caliphate.

Federal prosecutors say Abdisatar Ahmed Hassan got onto the radar of the Federal Bureau of Investigation after an anonymous tip. Hassan had been publicly praising terror organizations like Al Shabab and ISIS online. While on social media, he promoted propaganda videos calling for violent jihad. He also amplified videos related to the New Year’s Day terror attack in New Orleans, in which an ISIS-inspired person ran down and killed 14 people in the French Quarter with a truck.

Hassan tried twice to fly out of Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport to Somalia to become an active combatant for ISIS. The first time, he was turned away for not having a working visa and proper travel documentation. The second time, he was detained in Chicago, where authorities found he was carrying his birth certificate, naturalization certificate, and high school diploma on him.

After confiscating his cell phone, it was discovered that he had been in contact with a suspected ISIS recruiter. Other documents on the phone were about how to make homemade C-4 explosives and fertilizer bombs.

He will be sentenced at a later date.
