(KNSI) – Three suspects from St. Cloud were arrested Tuesday evening after a brief police chase ended with a vehicle crashing into a yard in Waite Park.
Around 6:50 p.m., the WPPD tried to stop a vehicle near the 3rd Street North Detour Area, Crossroads Center, for a traffic violation. The vehicle immediately fled, causing the officer to begin a pursuit. The chase lasted approximately 30 seconds before officers lost sight of the fleeing vehicle. Shortly after, Stearns County Dispatch received reports that the vehicle had crashed in a residential yard near where officers last saw it.
Multiple 911 calls from area residents reported that the occupants had fled the crashed vehicle on foot. Law enforcement quickly sealed off the area, with help from a Sartell Police officer who used a drone to search for the suspects. Officers were able to locate all three suspects with help from witnesses who directed them to their locations.
During the manhunt, a concerning report came in from a caller who said a gun had been displayed and discharged. However, no injuries were reported, and officers later determined the weapon was a BB gun found in possession of the juvenile suspect.
All suspects were medically cleared following the crash.
The 17-year-old driver from St. Cloud faces the most serious charges and is being held pending a court appearance. He’s being held on a gross misdemeanor charge of carrying a BB gun in a public place, felony aggravated assault, felony second-degree assault, misdemeanor fleeing a police officer, and felony fleeing a police officer in a motor vehicle. Two adult suspects were cited and released. Police identified them as 18-year-old Hussein Mohamed Makaran, of St. Cloud and 19-year-old Abshir Muhidin Farah of St. Cloud. They were charged with misdemeanor fleeing a police officer.
The Waite Park Police Department was assisted by the St. Cloud Police Department, Sartell Police Department, Minnesota State Patrol, and the Stearns County Sheriff’s Office.
The investigation into the incident is ongoing.
