(KNSI) – What started as “just a pipe dream” ten years ago is marking a milestone with a community celebration.
Grey Face Rescue & Retirement, based in St. Joseph, focuses specifically on rehoming and caring for dogs seven years and older. Board member Amanda Locke has watched the organization grow over the years and told KNSI News that older dogs are often the first to be surrendered when families face tough times and are often the last to find new homes. That’s where they come in. “Our mission is basically just to give them a soft landing and a fresh start.”
Grey Face Rescue often takes in dogs whose owners are moving to memory care facilities, assisted living, following an owner’s death, or when families can no longer afford their medical care. Despite these challenges, Locke emphasizes that older dogs offer unique advantages for potential adopters.
“If you’re someone that can’t survive the puppy stage, the puppy stage is hard, there’s a lot of energy, and there’s a lot of training, and there’s just lots of extra; versus senior dogs [that] are typically a little bit more docile.” She says they just need someone to be around.
The Grey Face Rescue “Decade of Dogs” party is Saturday, October 11th, from 12:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. at Pantown Brewing Company in St. Cloud. The free event will feature live music, a food truck, local vendors, giveaways, Grey Face merchandise, and adoptable senior dogs.
