(KNSI) – Minnesota Governor Tim Walz has ordered all United States and Minnesota flags to fly at half-staff following the deadly shooting at Annunciation Catholic Church and School.

The attack on Wednesday morning in Minneapolis left two children dead and 17 people injured. “Minnesota is heartbroken by the senseless shooting that took place this morning,” Governor Walz said in his statement. “I’m praying for our kids and teachers whose first week of school was marred by this horrific act of violence.”

The proclamation, issued on Wednesday afternoon, honors the victims of the shooting that occurred during Mass marking the first week of school. Walz also praised the response efforts, thanking the officers, first responders, clergy, and teachers who provided comfort, as well as the hospital staff who saved lives.

The order directs flags to remain at half-staff indefinitely, with additional guidance on when they will be raised to come.

While the flag order applies to all state buildings, the governor has encouraged individuals, businesses, and other organizations throughout Minnesota to voluntarily lower their flags as well in remembrance of the victims.

The governor’s proclamation concludes by stating that “with deepest sorrow, the State of Minnesota recognizes the victims of this tragedy, honors their memory, and stands in solidarity with the Annunciation community.”
