(KNSI) – One of the state house’s leading voices against fraud is running for governor.
GOP Representative Kristin Robbins announced her candidacy on Wednesday morning. Robbins tells KNSI Radio her background will help bridge the gulf between the Twin Cities metro and greater Minnesota. “I’m from rocks and cows country. I’m originally from Crookston, and then my family moved to upper Michigan when I was growing up, and then I came back and went to Bethel College. I’ve been here raising our family. We have three girls we raised in the suburbs.”
Rocks and cows is a famous descriptor of greater Minnesota by Governor Tim Walz in 2017.
Robbins’ district is centered in Maple Grove. When asked about the multiple fraud investigations still ongoing in the state, Robbins noted she expects the final figure to end up well over $1 billion since 2019, all of which occurred during the Walz administration. Robbins chairs the House Fraud and Oversight Committee.
Even though Walz is a former public teacher, Robbins believes he is vulnerable on education. She says Minnesota kids are being failed by the very schools that should be educating them. Talking about voters, Robbins states, “They want good test scores again. Minnesota used to be a leader in education, and now 50% of our kids cannot read and do math at grade level. It’s shocking.”
Robbins thinks the downward trend in achievement is due to poor priorities. She took aim at Minnesota being deemed a sanctuary state for transgender surgery, where, as long as a teen can find a supporting adult to endorse going under the knife, they can get procedures done that have been banned in states where they live. The policy encourages the operations even if the parents of the child disagree.
There were already three others in the GOP field, including 2022 GOP nominee Dr. Scott Jensen and Kendall Qualls.
