(KNSI) — A car found by a fisherman in the Mississippi River near Sartell over the weekend appears to be linked to a missing persons case dating back to the 1960s after human remains were discovered inside.
An angler discovered the metallic blue 1963 Buick Electra stuck in the sediment on Sunday near Riverside Avenue, and it was pulled from the river on Wednesday afternoon.
The Stearns County Sheriff’s Department says the Benton County Sheriff’s Department contacted them about a missing persons case from September 25th, 1967. On that date, 59-year-old Roy George Benn went missing after eating breakfast at King’s Supper Club, a cafe attached to Claude’s Shell Station, on Highway 10 in Sartell. Benn was last seen driving the exact same type of car before he vanished.
Early Thursday morning, Sartell Police Chief Brandon Silgjord issued a statement saying human remains had been found inside the car, which was intact but severely deteriorated. It had been underwater for decades and was filled with river sediment.
The investigation is ongoing.
