(KNSI) – The St. Cloud Area School District is embarking on its first comprehensive review of elementary school boundaries in more than two decades.

The district-wide evaluation comes as enrollment imbalances have created significant challenges across the 250-square-mile district. Some elementary schools are operating beyond capacity while others remain underutilized, prompting district leaders to seek solutions.

The review aims to create zones that maximize access to schools and specialized programs, streamline bus routes to reduce costs, make the best use of buildings, and support effective staff and program placement.

The boundary review process will unfold through a structured, cooperative approach that will include community input. A core team of 10 to 12 members, including district administrators, building leaders, and union representatives, will begin by analyzing key data points, including enrollment projections, municipal growth plans, building capacities, and program accessibility.

After that team is done, a broader input team of 40 to 50 people will help refine potential solutions. This group will include district staff, parents, community members, and administrators representing diverse perspectives across the district.

The district plans to maintain transparency throughout the review process, with information and feedback opportunities available on the district website. In November, the district will host information meetings at each elementary school to make sure families can find out more about any proposed changes and share their thoughts.

District leaders expect to present final recommendations to the St. Cloud Area School District Board for a vote in December, with any approved changes likely taking effect for the following school year.
