(KNSI) – Teamsters Local 120 is saber rattling, warning a strike is likely coming against restaurant food distributor Sysco.
The union represents 230 drivers and warehouse workers. The group is asking for increased wages, better benefits, and improvements to working conditions. If Minnesota workers strike, it would further a trend seen in recent years across the country. Strikes were called in 2023 in Indianapolis, Indiana, and Louisville, Kentucky, against Sysco. The union says record company profits are not being reflected in the contracts offered to workers from the company.
The strike authorization means a work stoppage is possible as of Friday, August 1st, when the current contract expires. Teamsters Local 120 President Tom Erickson warns, “If Sysco doesn’t put a serious proposal on the table, our members will be on the picket line. This greedy corporation can either negotiate a fair deal or face the consequences.”
A strike would have potentially significant impacts on day-to-day life. Sysco supplies several different types of restaurants with easy-to-make meals that find their way to plates across the state. Sysco’s catalog also includes higher-end ingredients like meat, poultry, and seafood that restock restaurants through its logistics network.
