(KNSI) — After storms knocked out power to tens of thousands of Xcel Energy customers, including hundreds in the St. Cloud area Sunday, there’s a high confidence forecast for more severe thunderstorms again Monday afternoon and evening.
The Storm Prediction Center has issued an enhanced, or three out of five, risk for severe weather. Forecasters say damaging winds are the biggest threat, potentially exceeding 75 miles per hour with the strongest storms, and even mentioning a possible derecho, which is a widespread, long-lived storm system characterized by straight-line winds. Tornadoes and hail are also possible, especially in western Minnesota.
There are unstable atmospheric conditions today with high moisture, strong temperature contrasts, and wind shear. That helps organize storm cells into dangerous lines.
The National Weather Service says to monitor the weather closely today and have a way to get warnings.
