(KNSI) – A freight train hauling hazardous materials derailed on Thursday evening near Watkins, though authorities report no railcars were punctured and there is no leak or threat to public safety.
According to a press release from the Meeker County Sheriff’s Office, around 7:20 p.m., the Canadian Pacific Kansas City train left the tracks in the 66000 block of Meeker/Stearns Street, about a mile west of town.
First responders rushed to the scene, and no injuries were reported.
The cause of the derailment remains unknown and is under investigation.
CPKC crews continue working alongside emergency personnel to clear the scene. Railroad crews will be parking trucks on Meeker/Stearns Street, leading to a partial closure of the road. Motorists who regularly use the route will need to find an alternate route.
