(KNSI) – The Minnesota Pollution Control Agency is expanding an air quality alert to include the St. Cloud area.

The alert runs until 11:00 p.m. Friday. A band of heavy smoke from Saskatchewan and Manitoba will blanket about three-quarters of the state. All of western and northern Minnesota are covered, as are the central and south central regions.

It runs to about the Interstate 35 corridor, stopping in the Twin Cities metro and at Albert Lea. The air quality alert is in the red category, meaning outdoor conditions are unhealthy for all groups. The problems will really escalate here on Thursday morning.

Being outside, you might feel your eyes, nose, and mouth become irritated. Coughing, chest tightness, or shortness of breath are also possible. For those with existing cardiovascular or respiratory illnesses, it will be dangerous to be exposed to the outside air.
