(KNSI) – The Minnesota Attorney General is warning of a glut of pyramid schemes claiming to be a great investment opportunity for e-scooters.
What seems to be legitimate salespeople will contact someone promising that, in return for financial buy-in, they would be entitled to receive a portion of rental payments made to a fictitious scooter company. Oftentimes, the target will be encouraged to get their friends and family on board as well.
Officials say the scooters do not exist, and the only way for the scam to continue is for new people to get signed up. If the influx of new targets slows to a trickle, the scheme falls apart.
Some signs that a person is being targeted by a pyramid scheme include high-pressure sales tactics, especially regarding a product where the sellers don’t have a working model to show off, and payments being made using cryptocurrencies rather than through a bank or credit card.
