(KNSI) – Benton County Public Health and the Rice Fire Department are teaming up for a training class focusing on an often neglected aspect of emergency response.

Stop the Bleed is a 90-minute course at Rice City Hall on the evening of Tuesday, July 29th. Beginning at 6:30, it will cover the basics of how to keep someone alive through recognizing and putting a halt to external bleeding with direct pressure, wound packing, and the use of tourniquets. The lesson will cover both tourniquets available at a store or online and those that can be made on the fly for individuals hiking or vacationing in a remote area where response times are long.

The class is free. Organizers say students do not need to have prior medical training to take part. Those interested in enrolling can sign up here.
