(KNSI) – A Big Lake police officer saved a driver from a burning vehicle Tuesday morning in a dramatic rescue that’s being called heroic.
Around 9:00 a.m., Officer Autumn Hanson was called to a crash on County Road 43 just north of the city, where an SUV hit a tree, trapping the driver inside while it was filling with heavy smoke.

When Hanson arrived, she saw small flames growing from the front of the vehicle. Fearing the SUV could explode soon, she immediately dove through the rear passenger door to pull the driver to safety.
Moments later, the vehicle was consumed by flames.
The driver was taken to the hospital by ambulance and suffered only minor injuries. Officer Hanson wasn’t hurt.
“The immediate and deliberate actions taken by Officer Hanson reflect what our officers are willing to sacrifice for those who need our help,” said BLPD Police Chief John Kaczmarek. “I commend Officer Hanson for her bravery and self-sacrifice.”
