(KNSI) — The Minnesota Pollution Control Agency has issued an air quality alert for northwest and north central Minnesota, effective from 6:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. on Friday, July 11th.

The alert covers the Brainerd Lakes Area, Bemidji, East Grand Forks, Moorhead, International Falls, and Roseau, as well as the Tribal Nations of Mille Lacs, Leech Lake, White Earth, and Red Lake.

Heavy ground level smoke from wildfires in central Canada is expected to move into northwest Minnesota early Friday morning behind a cold front and will reach the Purple AQI. The first band of smoke will push through during the day and reach northeastern Minnesota by evening. A second, more widespread round of smoke will arrive in northwest Minnesota Friday evening and may impact the northern half of the state on Saturday.

The MPCA says cleaner air is expected to move into the state from the west on Sunday, with air quality improvements beginning Sunday afternoon.

Purple AQI levels are considered very unhealthy for everyone, and people these areas should avoid prolonged or heavy exertion and remain indoors when possible.

Fine particle levels are expected to reach the red AQI category across northwest and north central Minnesota, encompassing Brainerd, Moorhead, International Falls, and the Tribal Nations of Mille Lacs, Leech Lake, White Earth, and Red Lake. Red AQI levels are considered unhealthy for everyone. In these areas, sensitive groups should avoid prolonged or heavy exertion and limit time spent outdoors, while all residents should limit prolonged or heavy exertion and outdoor activities.
