(KNSI) – A Planned Unit Development to roughly double the capacity of a daycare center on St. Cloud’s north side passed unanimously at Monday’s city council meeting.
The building, located in the 600 block of 21st Avenue North, is situated at a transition point between industrial and residential properties. It had previously been used by a church that operated a daycare for up to 37 children. The new limit is 71.
Council President Mike Conway says daycare capacity has been studied in the area by the United Way of Central Minnesota, showing we are thousands of spots short of what is needed, and notes daycares take on added importance as the city tries to make itself friendlier for the working class. “It’s a catch-22 for many young families, especially. Sometimes, it’s actually cost prohibitive to get involved in some daycares because one kid is $1,000 a week for some kids.”
The property is nearly 8,000 square feet and was originally built as an office/warehouse in 1981.
