(KNSI) — Red, white, and boom may be on the agenda for the Fourth of July, but state officials say knowing what’s legal and what’s not and how to be safe around fireworks can help avoid a star spangled disaster.
In Minnesota, the sale, possession, and use of certain non-aerial and non-explosive fireworks are permitted. This includes items like sparklers, ground-based sparkling devices, and novelty items. However, explosive and aerial fireworks, such as firecrackers, bottle rockets, and roman candles, are not allowed.
Here’s a more detailed breakdown. Wire or wood sparklers are allowed, along with various ground-based sparkling devices such as fountains, cones, illuminating torches, wheels, and ground spinners. Novelty items, including snakes, party poppers, and snappers, are also legal for purchase and use.
Fireworks that explode or shoot into the air, which means firecrackers, bottle rockets, missiles, roman candles, and mortars, are not legal. It’s also illegal to bring fireworks into Minnesota from other states. Fireworks also can’t be used on any public property, including parks, roads, and schools.
Violations of fireworks laws can result in fines and even jail time, with penalties ranging from misdemeanors to gross misdemeanors for larger quantities.
More than 11,000 people visit emergency rooms each year for fireworks related injuries. Burns are most common because fireworks can reach temperatures exceeding 2,500 degrees Fahrenheit. Sparklers alone can cause serious burns. Keep a bucket of water or a hose nearby to put out any used products.
