(KNSI) – Sauk Rapids could become one of the first cities in the region to approve a commercial cannabis license at its Monday city council meeting.

Uncle Hippies is asking for a Conditional Use Permit to operate out of the old G&J Building at 1260 10th Street North. The applicants describe themselves as a social equity, family owned micro-business that will grow, harvest, and prepare cannabis for sale using clean rooms. The facility will be designed to protect the plants against bacteria and mold while limiting air pollution from what are termed volatile organic compounds, or VOCs.

The plan is not to use pesticides, resorting instead to a mix of beneficial insects to control pests. The building would be monitored 24/7, and any room that had cannabis plants inside would only be accessible via electronic badges.

The issue will be decided at a public hearing. The planning commission has unanimously recommended approval.
