(KNSI) – Even after a parade of seemingly never-ending wet weather, most of Minnesota is still being affected by drought.
The worst of it is in the state’s northern half, abnormally dry conditions reaching as far down as Mille Lacs County, along with slivers of Benton and Isanti Counties. Another splotch of abnormally dry conditions runs from Lac Qui Parle County to the Iowa State Line.
Moderate drought is confined to less than 10 percent of the state. Roseau and Kittson Counties west of Lake of the Woods are still parched. The other pocket is from Cass and Wadena Counties into the headwaters area.
Moderate drought is the least intense of the four stages in the scale used by the United States Drought Monitor, but where it is positioned matters. Focused on the start of the Mighty Mississippi and its tributaries and other feeders, it is keeping a cap on the flowage downstream. The St. Cloud area is seeing water racing through at acceptable levels, but it is near the low threshold.
That compares to minor flooding that has popped up on the south fork of the Crow River near Mayer and the Minnesota River just east of Redwood Falls.
