(KNSI) – As central Minnesotans enjoy the nation’s newest federal holiday, you may wonder what’s open and closed.

Juneteenth is celebrated on June 19th. The day marks the arrival of Union soldiers in Galveston, Texas, who informed the last remaining enslaved people of their freedom, two and a half years after the Emancipation Proclamation had been issued by President Abraham Lincoln.

City, county, state, and federal offices are closed on Thursday, and parking meters won’t be enforced in downtown St. Cloud. Most national banks will also be closed, and there will be no postal service.

However, UPS and FedEx pickup and delivery services will remain available, and their store locations will stay open. Most other stores and restaurants will operate on regular schedules, though it’s recommended to check with individual businesses for specific hours.
