(KNSI) – A candlelight vigil is set for Monday night at Eastman Park downtown St. Cloud to remember House Speaker Emerita Melissa Hortman and her husband Mark after they were gunned down in the Brooklyn Park home early Saturday morning.
A press release from the organizers says the vigil is an opportunity “to come together in unity, remembrance, and resilience. All members of the community are invited to join as we mourn the loss of Melissa and Mark Hortman, support the recovery of [Senator] John and Yvette Hoffman, and stand in solidarity against violence and hatred.”
The vigil starts at 8:30 p.m. at the main stage. At 8:45, participants will migrate to the walking path to light luminaries and observe 15 minutes of silence.
No luminaries or candles will be provided at the event. Attendees are asked to bring their own luminaries, candles, or lights as a symbol of hope and remembrance.
Police say the Hortmans were shot and killed by 57-year-old Vance Boelter. Speaker Hortman was pronounced dead at the scene. Her husband was pronounced dead at the hospital. Senator Hoffman was shot nine times, with a bullet narrowly missing his heart. His wife was shot eight times. Both underwent multiple surgeries and are expected to survive.
