(KNSI) – According to St. Cloud Police Chief Jeff Oxton, the organizers for the planned demonstration occurring at 1:00 p.m. in St. Cloud have postponed their event.
Citing the assassination of Speaker Emerita Melissa Hortman and her husband, Mark, and the attempted assassination of Senator John Hoffman and his wife, Yvette, they say this is out of an abundance of caution and and effort to promote public safety.
In a separate email, Chief Oxton says “In combination with State and Federal authorities and due to the targeted shootings of state lawmakers overnight, we are asking the public not to attend any planned demonstrations or rallys (sic) in St. Cloud today. This is out of an abundance of caution an in an effort to keep all of our citizens safe.
A manhunt is underway for the unidentified suspect.
An earlier gathering in Courthouse Square began at 11:00 a.m. as planned. Billed as a block party, it looked to have between 100 and 200 attendees, most of whom were gathered along West St. Germain Street and 8th Avenue North.
