(KNSI) – Two Nevada residents who previously lived in Minnesota have been charged with conspiracy to commit voter registration fraud.
Ronnie Williams and Lorraine Lee Combs face federal charges for allegedly creating fake voter registration applications in Minnesota between 2021 and 2022. Acting U.S. Attorney Joseph H. Thompson said the FBI stopped the scheme before any fraudulent ballots were actually cast.
According to court documents, Williams and Combs worked together to create fictitious names and false information to fill out Minnesota voter registration applications. Prosecutors say they signed the forms certifying the information was accurate despite knowing it was false. They then submitted the fraudulent applications through “Foundation 1,” an organization that pays people to register voters in Minnesota. The two allegedly split the money.
“Election fraud strikes at the heart of our democracy,” said Acting U.S. Attorney Joseph H. Thompson. “Thankfully, the FBI stopped this fraud in its tracks, before anyone successfully cast a fraudulent ballot.”
FBI Special Agent in Charge Alvin M. Winston Sr. emphasized the importance of election security, stating that the defendants “attempted to deprive the citizens of Minnesota of a secure and reliable election process.”
Williams is scheduled to appear in federal court on July 8th. A court date for Combs hasn’t been set. Both could face up to five years in prison and/or a $10,000 fine.
